Love the thought of Leo just casually being well traveled to absurd degrees. Like one day they’re facing their new Big Bad of the year and like, Draxum or whoever says that the key to their fight is located somewhere in, like, Latvia or some place, but no one knows where to start.
Then Leo’s like “oh I know a place” and when asked how the heck he could know of one it smash cuts to Leo falling through the ceiling of said place due to a portal mishap.
Also love the idea of Leo, being as accidentally (and then later, purposefully) well traveled as he is, sometimes taking his family on outings to different places all over, maybe to some new Yokai spots he found along the way.
In these places, Leo 100% lets his bros get scammed by tourist traps.
#rottmnt#rise of the teenage mutant ninja turtles#rottmnt leo#rise leo#rottmnt headcanons#bro was so excited about buying stuff that he didn’t realize it was a scam until too late#so now he’s super sus of all that BUT super willing to laugh at his fam for making the same mistake#anyway yeah I love Leo being well traveled because it honestly makes sense? why NOT use your teleportation to travel if you can do it fast#all his portal mishaps in the series as well as that time he accidentally went to Paris (+ once a diff dimension?) live in my head rent free#Leo destroying the stall of some random family’s restaurant in Paraguay and having to work it off the rest of the summer#he’s just like ‘hey guys I’m heading out’ but doesn’t mention it’s for a part time job in a different country#he only knows like English and Spanish BUT he’s picked up on a lot of other languages too due to his misadventures#tho he mostly knows a whole lot of various swear words#leo about to tease donnie for getting banned from witch town only to remember HE’S banned from a place in Turkey: 😬#he keeps trying to find where he accidentally put his brothers in Tahiti but he can’t find it and he’s so salty about it lol

portable friend (magic)
#in an alternate universe a bird is telling the audience that he will pull a disaster gay out of his hat . everyone is amazed#i am clawing my way out of depression like NO!!! WE DONT HAVE TIME FOR THIS!!!!!!! WE HAVE TO LOOK AT EIDEN IN HIS LITTLE OUTFIT!!!!#WITH HIS NEW FRIEND!!!! seriously. where did he get that bird. is he a dove whisperer after all?#secret language training with Father? maybe not. magic pigeons and owls probably speak different dialects of Bird#eiden eating so much at the mansion that he frequently passes out in the courtyard#he tried to walk off the feast. that fool.#so while he's napping on the ground#pigeons and the like will pick the crumbs off him#something something essence exposure due to wackiness and potent magic of the mansion's inhabitants#or maybe the bird just ate off eiden so many times that even when eiden wakes up#the bird is unafraid. keeps pecking away#and eiden's like. You are my new friend. wawnt to be a part of my magic act?#and birdie's all 'coo' (if you got more crumbs? yea boi)#eiden rewards birdie with many plentiful crumbs after each magic training session#soon the magic dove shall be the one passed out in the courtyard#and SMALLER creatures will come to feast upon the residual crumbs#thus perpetuating the food-coma-scavenger-magic-duo dynamic into perpetuity (microscopic level)#i too was reminded of our beloved pigeon dating game as soon as i saw that magic bird#hm. what shall i call this combination of concepts?#i have a feeling i will revisit it. almost certainly. thus i need a tag for it#nu: hatoful sounds too much like an actual part of the original series LOL#then perhaps we shall go with#nu: hatoval#nu carnival eiden

putting it into an ask because I don't want to derail your post sorry
As someone who's culture lost their last L1 Speaker around the time they were born. This!! So much this!!
It is EXTREMELY difficult to learn endangered languages, and from experience the people who do know how to speak some of it are extremely protective of it even to others from that same culture! (something that makes me even more attached to the dalish as a peoples sigh)
I would die for the chance to speak my tribes original language but even if I could jump through the hoops to do it, a decade is decisively not. enough. time. to do so. Yet alone to adopt the native cadence of the language. Again even if I wanted too! Which I desperately desperately do!
Lavellan would have to jump through so many hoops that by the time she might be ready to start speaking it regularly (in the context of ancient elvhen) that Veilguard would probably be on the horizon already. That's also given the idea that there are even universities willing to put aside discriminatory behavior twords the elves to provide classes on such specific subjects. AND putting aside the whole 'wow that's straight up the herald of andraste in my Sociolinguistics class' with the problems that would cause.
I mean, I know its a fantasy universe and I'm really projecting on it here but like hear me out- I have a dictionary and a book of stories translated by scholars I will never meet, and a series of audio-files that I myself had to copy convert to a format I could have on my phone and listen to. I'm untrained and uneducated on how to go about it sure but even with my available tools it feels like an uphill battle with every new word I pick out to practice. I sing songs from that book fully knowing Im butchering it the whole time, and try my best to feel connected to something i know I cannot fully understand. And that's beautiful! That;s fantastic! There's something to truly love there! And veilguard doesn't even let us try to explore that idea!
The fact that we don't get to choose whether or not we drank from the well makes this so extremely frustrating. The game gives both the Inquisitor and Moriggan the benefits of the well without ever allowing our input. Because to me the only way that Lavellan could become even partially fluent in ancient elvhen would be if she drank from the well. But then Moriggan is also allowed all types of unlocked knowledge from her deus-ex-inner-mythal shes suddenly alright with having been provided from her mother despite her horror in DAI.
It takes away a huge part of what I think Solas really liked about a romanced Inky, as she was always so curious and open to learning new things about the past- Even when they would clash on certain subjects. It takes away this really lovely concept that even if they are going into the torment nexus together that he could at least be teaching her the language in there on top of it all. He would love her broken annunciations and he awkward cadence, and respond in kind ;w;
I'm super biased about the torment nexus ending because I love the mythological tragedy of it but there should have been so many more choices ugghh. While I would still choose this ending regardless I think the idea that the inquisitor should have been able to have at least an on screen spat between her and Solas, There is absolutely good reason for it all considering.
She should have had moments where she slips in and out of what she had learned from the ancient dialect, Where she goes from in canter to out because of how passionate she might be in that moment. Going from trade to elvhen and back. It would be glaringly obvious that she practiced what she did want to say to him in the final battle and he would be able to tell. It would mean so much more to him than her just magically understanding it all at once.
we could have one of his stupid chuckles with tears welling in his eyes and everything like damn you bioware *shaking fist at cloud*
At least give me some kind of 'a romanced inquisitor convened with spirits to learn' kind of explanation if you're going to magic it into her knowledge I mean please!
Anyway sorry for the ramble, I wouldn't have the confidence to share this if it wasn't for your posts so thanks for all of your lore-dives and analysis posts I do genuinely enjoy all of them.
♥🤝
yeah!! i very much agree. i'm very mildly bilingual (not good at it ahaha) and like... that language is not endangered in the least, half my family still speaks it, and it's still just hard to re-learn on a basic level! and to me there's always that degree of self consciousness and feeling a bit bad about not knowing, when it's a language i feel like i "should" know, as opposed to a fully second language that i'm just learning from scratch. and personally i get stressed and actively worse at it when people expect me to be fluent and get disappointed when i'm not. the social pressure alone removes some linguistic ability, haha.
so i found it sad that lavellan - regardless of the well - gets pushed into suddenly being 100% fluent. she can still be dalish and not good at it! or just not the type of person who'd think to speak in it in front of random people (everyone else standing there fdhjdgd). i thought of my inquisitor as a city elf who was adopted into the clan as a child, and tried REALLY hard to learn elvhen afterwards bc she wanted to fit in. but it's not "natural" to her to slip into it for longer or more complex ideas. and arguably if a lavellan got "woe, fluency be upon ye" from the well, they might actually be LESS likely to use it in speaking, bc it is also a bit of a mind control symptom at that point...
and imo it's actually really sweet that solas falls in love with someone who - at least in dai - is really different from him! on top of being a cringe fail mortal from the world he initially hated, and from a culture that doesn't like him, lavellan does not have to be very in tune with the language or culture as he knows it. he goes for their ~rare and marvelous spirit~ rather than anything else, and is happy to share with them, but it's never like a mandatory thing.
And veilguard doesn't even let us try to explore that idea!
and this is exactly it!! i think that experience of slowly picking up things and figuring out how much you can learn is really important, and they just skipped over that entirely to "lavellan is now suddenly fluent in elvhen. yay!" which kind of elides how much work that is, how or why they would've done that, whether they would've wanted to...
like that's a whole character arc that seemingly just gets skipped offscreen and made mandatory! and it's not bc the writers are saying anything really deep and meaningful about cultural reconnection, but bc i think they were likely not ever in the position of having to think about those types of decisions themselves, and uncharitably, were like "ok. solas is super elfy, right. so to make it more romantic, make lavellan super elfy as well! yay! Problem Solved :)" when that was never a problem. ;-;
#asks#txt#veilguard critical#solavellan /#solas#also never feel bad for rambling we are all throwing stones in glass houses of rambling on tumblr dot ted talk :')#projecting onto elves is Valid#i'm in the situation where both my parents spoke different languages natively so they only spoke english at home with me ahaha#so i picked up a bit from my mom and and aunts and grandma but it's patchy and also not... convenient to relearn#bc they were essentially speaking a casual dialect mixture of like 3 languages interchangeably which i now perceive as One Thing#but it is not taught that way anywhere and instead you just get formal versions of each language separately#which just sounds very weird and confuses me more :'''')#and also i guess in my cultural context there is a significant problem with xenophobia and cultural purity standards#so i just never liked the vg vibe of ''now lavellan is more like solas :)'' 😭#i would like them to be a little bit different actually...

So is French a second language for you or are we going to see you slowly learn French for your blorbos?

I sadly don't know any languages other than English, and I have a heavy accent and a particular fondness for Australian slang which means even my English could be side-eyed suspiciously lmao.
I mostly rely on phrasebooks when I can. However, for some reason, my French phrasebook is sadly lacking in French phrases about cults or tentacles or anomalous entities sent from the Void created by a maddened archotech, so I do use Google Translate or Reddit for some of the more nuanced phrases.
How funny would it be to try and explain to people in future that I learned another language thanks to my oc blorbos though XD
#asks#gracie plays#that's Sponge the sheep#they keep an eye on me when I'm working#and they like watching me play COTL sometimes#I have a many phrasebooks#the Greek one was purchased specifically for my rimworld stuff#because Vasso from the Children of Ecthuctu is Greek#the others I have had since high school#because I was a hetalia girlie I'm afraid#but they have their uses for OCs and for rimworld comics#ALSO#they're in alphabetical order on my shelf (except for the first two which are thicker than the others)#but should I put the Greek one at the end because it has a different colour?#some days it annoys me and other days it doesn't#anyway#to answer your question#I regretfully don't have a second language#but hopefully I can pick up some French now that Jut is sticking around for the foreseeable future#thanks for the ask!!#have a fabulous day <3 <3

It doesn't make that much sense that Wesker would know any other language other than like english, maybe some broken french or german but in my head, i just expect him to be multilingual.
Like he knows english, french, german, italian, spanish, russian and maybe some chinese, japanese, idk fucking latin? Some fucking bantu. Or like portuguese or something.
Like i do not know where this man found the time to just be studying something completely fucking random compared to what he usually be doing i.e. viralogy and other sciencey nonsense like dating his boyfriend, birkin and his wife. I just expect this man was built with all the languages.
#He definitely intelligent enough to pick up words from different languages#i'm just saying#like where would he find the time#i am CONVINCED he knows different languages tho#albert wesker#resident evil#biohazard#re headcanons#headcanon#wesker headcanons#this man started his language lessons at the age of one i stg

guys should i just learn a second language
#i have so many mutuals/followers who are european and know at least 2 languages#and i feel so embarrassed being monolingual#and like. i feel like im pretty decent at imitation for accent?#ever since i got into k-media i had the mind to learn korean#which i do know quite a few words and i feel i have the pronunciation down real good#but ngl learning hangul and a whole different alphabet structure is very intimidating#i would suck at properly pronunciating french but i used to be able to read it fluently. what if i picked that back up?#or italian just bc i adorrreee the language. so fun.#and the off chance i move internationally i would choose either italy or spain (hi clara)#soooo … spanish?#though i'd feel i'd suck at that#lindsay.diary

Headcanon: Starlo does know some Japanese from being friends with Ceroba and hanging around her/being taught by her. He's definitely not as good as Ceroba is at it (and even Ceroba's Japanese isn't all that spectacular because monsterkind being trapped underground for who knows how many centuries has caused information like foreign languages to be lost to time. She's conversationally fluent). Unfortunately, Starlo understands it better than he speaks/reads it and his pronunciation leaves a lot to be desired. The best way to put it is that it sounds pretty similar to Yokohama Pidgin Japanese.
#i am gonna admit upfront that i am NOT an expert on japanese culture/the language. so if i say something really egregious: I'm sorry.#also nothing but respect for pidgin languages in this home. it's two different cultures building bridges between them the best that they ca#disclaimer over. i like the idea of starlo and ceroba picking up things from the other person even if they don't really show it#starlo knows enough japanese to know that chujin is shit talking about him under his breath and even though starlo doesn't#know too much japanese he knows enough to say something to the effect of ''i can understand you.'' chujin stops doing that afterwards#another more angsty headcanon is that after chujin passed and kanako fell down ceroba wore her kimono with the right side over the#left (which is how corpses wear kimonos) because she was so certain that the grief of losing both of them would make her fall down#starlo was the only one to notice it and know what it meant.#char: starlo#char: ceroba ketsukane

Feeling incredible desire to study Romance languages and their linguistics right before my exam (it is not in Romance languages)
#I feel like I’ve had Italian and Spanish banging in my head suddenly for the right amount of time to suddenly take a step back and find#The Latin soooo interesting#Like how the Vulgar Latin branched in so many directions is fascinating and then you can see too how one word semantically evolved into a#Bunch of different words#Not just within the other romance languages but borrowings into Arabic Greek Slavic languages German languages and soooo forth#Really want to go back to French pick up ladino Romanian Galician Catalan etc etc etc#Society if I had done Latin/french/spanish instead of the specialization I did do (but then I would be Guilty)

I really wanna watch the Japanese cutscenes of Sonic games but first I must silence all the voices I've heard over these past 5 years of being a fan, that claim that all the Japanese Sonic content is inherently superior to the English-language content.
#when it comes to something like localizing anime or other international stories i can be a huge stickler#but sonic has had western influence and creatives from such an early stage that it feels like a bit of cultural exchange if that makes sens#characters originally conceived in japan with us cultural influences. games saw production in the west as early as i wanna say sonic 2.#y'know? i know there have been a lot of disparities over the years but idk idk.#it feels different from just a shitty 4kids dub to me idk#like i wanna watch the japanese cutscenes so i can pick up on character details i might've missed#especially because i know the 2000s games had a lot of translation errors#I've been watching sonic x in Japanese because like i said. inaccurate anime dubs bother me#mostly for accessibility reasons. people who struggle with subtitles are barred from watching the show as intended#idk why the games feel Different to me? it's not nostalgia.#i have more nostalgia for the old sailor moon dub and i treat that thing like a piñata#idk what it issss i feel like if i watch the Japanese cutscenes it'll make me?? feel bad??? for liking the english version of sonic????#i think there's this idea that english-language sonic media is ''wrong'' and it makes me feel bad :(#i wanna enjoy Japanese Sonic without feeling like I'm being lectured about how wrong i was because i didn't know the ''real'' Sonic :(

I like to imagine that the fed workers on quesadilla island have their own dialect of sign language that they created themselves over time. Cuz sign language is so different and is as varied as spoken language is and I think it would be really cool if there was like. Quesadilla Sign Language. or something
#txt#qsmp#qsmp headcanons#i think the eggs also pick it up but also know the sign versions of their native language(s)#also dialect isnt the word i was looking for here but idk how else to describe there being multiple sign languages that are all different#like how english has different dialects but sign language is a whole different language between those#like american and british english have dialect differences. but ASL and BSL are just completely separate

Yeah, I also want to see 2 season, especially Destiny and my favorite Delirium, but I'm also curius who will play Remiel and Duma.
[i think this ask was pre-s2 announcement bc 2022 but YEAH]
i'm a HUUUUUUUUUGE duma stan you dont even KNOW
#sandman#the sandman#duma#asks#answers#continuing my trend of answering asks from 2022#anyway im on my duma sign language train#i consider duma's domain to be the *concept* of silence. like as an audio phenomenon. that doesnt mean he cant talk!!#i'm glad that in the lucifer comics they respect him and usually seem to be able to understand him without oral speech#potentially bc (per canon) he *can* mentally project what he wants people to know#but i think they missed an opportunity to actually have duma tell lucifer in *words* that he is both deeply loved And a little bitch#like creatures like lucifer know every language so????#(also. signed angel conlang anyone??? with WINGS???)#(actually i think that's impractical since it needs to be usable during flight. but having different forms is also awesome.)#lucking out on this that the sign for me too/same seems to be the same in asl & bsl#ultimately i don't think that duma should need to speak a human signed language at all -- but for clarity idk which to pick you know?#considering that this is an english-speaking comic with a british writer with a largely american audience#*probably* asl bc i am american and don't want to mix myself up but#anyway if you are a native speaker of asl. if i ever do more comics with duma and others i Will need help#i know a few asl words but i do Not have a good grasp of grammar#so please feel free to correct or suggest or dm me idk !! i really want to interact w the d/Deaf community more#always open to language critique#and i kind of would love help designing angel sign conlang. bc the concept of duma giving lucifer a name sign lives in my head forever#fwiw i'm fully on the duma/lucifer qpp train by the way. like duma has been PINING.

Given that a lot of characters in Ben 10 speak their language without being translated into English, do you think that their language is so common that it's assumed you - supposedly an intergalactic traveler - have whatever language it is as part of your first, second or other languages that it was an oversight (depending on if the Omnitrix has a universal translator or not, one even Azmuth overlooked because something something that one comic about 'the basics to an expert look like advanced knowledge to a newbie') to not include a translation pack for those languages?
Like imagine if Sotoragg (or whatever specific Sotoragg language SixSix and the copycats speaks) is like one of the more common language, if not the MOST common language, of the interplanetarily recognised languages. Whether it's predominantly first language or someone's second language (Mandarin beats out English on first language alone, but countries that predominantly speak English are also predominantly monolingual, English has more second language speakers that pulls ahead), I don't know, but if Tetrax Shard - one of if not the last petrosapien - can understand SixSix while we as the viewer stuck without the knowledge of whatever Sotoragg language he's speaking, maybe it had to be one of the languages he had to learn because guess what Petropian languages aren't very lively now are they!?
#sotoraggian#sixsix#tetrax shard#they're here but as an example#ben 10#xenolinguistics#i know in the meta it's because it would be uninteresting to have every alien character speak english#having a masked character speak an alien language is a bonus because you don't have to worry how they'd make their sounds#especially the with the way sotoragg sounds or again- whatever sotoragg language sixsix speaks#another note- given that sixsix named himself after the caliber of his laser pistols#which have been helpfully translated into english for us#does that mean he's pulled the 'name yourself in a different language to make yourself sound cooler?'#like the english to japanese names- or the latin to english as a vice versa#which you could say the same for the 'shard' of tetrax shard but that depends on if it's his last name that flagged a accidental translatio#(his last name sounding like a more universal language that would translate to english as 'shard')#or him not having a last name- thinking it would sound cool to have one- and picking one that meant shard or straight up was shard#but that depends on petropian culture headcanons on if petrosapiens had last names or not
